Birthday Fun!

Couldn't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday than a nice loooooooooooong paddle down the Allegheny - so that's exactly what I did with a few friends on Sunday :)

Along for the ride :)  Umbrella to protect from the sun, it being a beautiful day... and perhaps to fend off some splashes from errant paddlers ;)

Biking Acrobatics

Bike_front_piece

I managed a pretty spectacular crash on my poor old Green Peugot bicycle last week...

Bike_sign'Old' being the operative term as it's age and dilapidated condition led to my circus-like flight off bike and onto pavement ;)  Take a look at the photo album for more specifics (click on the sphinx!)

Thankfully, I'm well on the way to recovery now, but owe a huge debt to them Bell cycle-helmet folk.  Thank you Bell!

Sadness and humour intermingled

Last weekend was both tragic and comedic , as often seems the case when things like this happen.Nancy_p

First the tradgedy.  Nancy Pelosi is missing - having escaped the confines of her cage, she's nowhere to be found inside the house and I think managed to make her way outside - to who knows where.
Of course, this is probably the most apt way for a hamster, whose goal in life is world domination, to begin her conquests - with a remarkable conjuring act.  But, nevertheless, it has left Sarah and I pretty sad.

Little_brown_bat1 The very next evening... a bat flew into my bedroom - upon which Sarah and I summised that it was probably Nancy dressed up in bat-hamster costume...

If only.

Nevertheless, Sarah proved my hero when she caught the winged critter (remarkably similar sized to dwarf hamsters, it has to be said) with the good 'ole 'bucket and broom' technique - I have to admit, I was petrified. Every fly-by had me thinking the bat was going to land itself on my neck and begin sucking my blood... yeah, it was a fruit bat, but still...

Bat evacuated (hopefully without injury to the poor thing), my memory flitted back to the wonderful Nancy and her many feats of astounding ability in her short life.  Blessed little hamster.

Hooray for Kennywood!

Carolyn_at_kennywoodA great place to go for an even of frolicking on fast roller-coasters!
Especially when the weather's cool and the lines (queues...) are short.

ThunderboltHooray!  (and yes, Carolyn, you do look a little too excited, but then, I felt like an 8-year-old for the evening too... running between the rides, pulling off cartwheels at opportune moments, screaming my head off on the Thunderbolt -pictured)

How much does this blog post weigh?

According to this article, around two ten-thousandths of a quadrillionth of an ounce...

(i.e. not a lot!)

Go take a read - it's quite amusing and desperately geeky :)

Look Mum, I made the paper!

Had almost forgotten that I did an interview with a reporter from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review over the phone last week... although I can't honestly say that I rememer using the word "backyard"... as if I would use such a blatant Americanism?!?

and here's the story:

weekend antics

The Paddlefish team took off to Moraine State Park this weekend for our annual team retreat.
Bunches of photos over at our Flickr Account, and hopefully a blog-wrap-up on the Paddlefish Team site soon.  In the mean-time, here's one thing that I did over the weekend.

and talking of radio...

... I got the chance to try my hand at a little broadcasting this week - albeit online (Podcast) and not on the airwaves, and for the Pittsburgh Symphony as opposed to NPR - but still, it was fun!

Take a listen:

Radio GaGa

Those who've known me for a while most likely also know my addiction to various radio program(me)s both here and back in the UK.  It all stems from a rather odd 6 months of my life working in a plastics factory and relying on BBC Radio 4 to survive the tedium - God bless Radio 4!

Well, now there's a fun-sounding competition over here to find the 'next Public Radio Host'

The Public Radio Talent Quest
and guess who is currently concocting his entry???
I know, I know - it's a silly enterprise but, well, one which I'm quite excited about.  So, I'll put something together this week, then you have to go and vote for me.  Or create your own pitch and compete against me. Or neither...  All good fun, regardless :)

"You can't get there from here"

It's one of my favourite Pittsburgh phrases - and it's sadly often the case  Sometimes, you just can't get there from where you are...

Pittsburgh_to_bournemouthAnd I would have said the same is true of trying to get to, let's say, my sister's house in Bournemouth from my house in Pittsburgh - I mean, it's not like you could just do a GoogleMap and find your way.

OR COULD YOU???

Take a look - and note instruction #25 which indicates the method for crossing the rather large stretch of water you encounter... *grin*  God bless Google and the wonderful sense of humour their developers have :) (thanks to the Now Show on Radio 4 for pointing this out)

Energy = Ergs

Another addition to that side bar over there ~~> is a new blog I've just set up - "Energy = Ergs", tracking the ongoing process of that silly idea I had and reported on earlier.

May not be of any interest to anyone out there at all - or maybe it is?  Either way, I wanted to have a written documentary of the whole thing...

Hamster Derby Day

"Derby"
Der·by     [dur-bee; Brit. dahr-bee]

However you pronounce it, my lovely little dwarf hamster, Nancy (sister to Ewok), competed in her first yesterday - and over there ~~~> are the photos to prove it.

Enjoy!
